Store pickup and local delivery: decide the rules before adding the buttons

A pickup option works only when the store can prepare the order at the promised location. Local delivery adds a second question: who can receive it, and when? Set these rules before designing checkout.

Separate “order received” from “ready to collect”.

A customer should know which location they chose, when to expect an update and what to bring when collecting. An order confirmation does not mean the bag is packed. Give staff a clear action for marking it ready and customers a separate notification.

If products need to move between locations, show the resulting lead time. Do not imply immediate pickup just because another branch has stock.

Write the exceptions down.

A small rules table is often more useful than another delivery icon. These are decisions to make with the merchant, not default promises for every shop.

Fulfilment decisions
QuestionDecision to record
Where can the order be collected?Participating locations, opening hours and actual availability.
Where do you deliver locally?Addresses or zones, fees, minimum order and delivery days.
What if an item is missing?Ask the customer, offer an agreed replacement or cancel the item.
What if the customer does not collect?A holding period and a staff process for releasing reserved stock.

The storefront and the local team need the same information.

Както едно време is a franchise retailer of locally made food products. Its online store uses pickup and local delivery. The useful connection is between what a shopper can choose online and what the location can actually fulfil.

Try an address outside the area.

Also test a closed location, an unavailable product and a mixed basket with different fulfilment restrictions. The customer should see a clear explanation before payment, not discover the restriction in a phone call afterwards.
